Coin Series: Kennedy Half Dollars

I'm going to start posting information about various coin series I collect along with photos of my coins.  This information will be dynamic and will be updated as needed.

Coin Series: Dansco 7070 Unites States Type Set Album

I'm going to start posting information about various coin series I collect along with photos of my coins.  This information will be dynamic and will be updated as needed.

Coin Series: Eisenhower (Ike) Dollars

Ike Dollars are an interesting set of coins.  The last of the large dollars, the series only ran from 1971 to 1978.  The 32 coin set consists of 16 business strike clad coins, 6 clad proofs, 5 40% silver business strike, and 5 40% silver proof coins.  1971 P&D Ikes and 1972 P&D Ikes were only available in rolls and bags while the 1973 coins were issues in mint sets only.  1971 -1974S business strike silver coins were issued seal in plastic in a blue envelope while the silver proof from those years were in a hard plastic case that came in a brown box. In 1976, the U.S Mint issues 2 bicentennial 40% silver sets, one uncirculated and the other proof.  These came with an Ike dollar, Kennedy Half, and Washington quarter.  The series ended in 1978 to make way for the Susan B. Anthony small dollar.

Jefferson Nickels An Underrated Series

When I first started collecting coins, Jefferson Nickels was the first series I assembled.  At first, I started with roll searching.  Some of the results are posted on this site.  After several months of collecting and reading some of the forums such as Coin Talk and Coin Community, I chose to upgrade my set to uncirculated coins.

I passed the coins from roll searching to kids which they enjoy looking at.  Jefferson Nickels are not hard to find from dealers.  What is hard to find is quality coins for a bargain.  The war nickels which are 35% silver are hard to find nice for under $100 a set.  Also, the 1942D and 1939D usually have a higher price tag with them.  The low mintage 1950D can be found almost anywhere at a good price.  These coins were hoarded as soon as they came out so most of the mintage survives in BU.

Making Money on eBay Selling Coins

For a while, I was actively buying coin lots on eBay to flip and earn money to purchase new coins for my collection. I can be hard to find a deal good enough to make money on eBay because of all the fees associated with doing so. Both eBay and Paypal will take their cut from your sale. About a year ago, I purchased a couple of silver Roosevelt Dime sets in Dansco Albums (1946 - 1964). These coins had very attractive toning and the price was right. I sold many of the common coins for around $20 each. These generally bring $3-$5 untoned. This price provided me to make a profit selling these and the proceeds went to my commemorative silver dollar set.

Thinning Out My Coin Collection

In my quest for completeness, I accumulated a large amount of coin albums that I "HAD" to fill.  Not only did I try to fill the labeled holes, but I bought blank Dansco pages to add early proof and the satin mint set coins from 2005 -2010.  My the collection I was building was fairly nice, but I started running into several problems.

The collection was growing too large.  The space required to properly store my coins kept growing.  This included needing to keep purchasing new albums and totes to store them.  Next brings the issue of weight.  Everything was getting too heavy.  It was a chore to even look at my albums.  Pulling out all of my bins and find the albums I was looking for was too much.  I didn't even want to look at the coins anymore.
